Ore & Soul

Every ending is only the sound of something about to be struck again

Grief does strange things to a person. It cracks things open.

The story

He works on him for eleven minutes.

It is the longest eleven minutes of his life.

Rowan Slate has answered emergency calls in his small mountain town for years. Nothing prepared him for losing the man who believed in him when no one else did. Grief, he is discovering, does not announce itself on a schedule. It opens up under him like a trapdoor he’d forgotten was there.

And through it comes something stranger. The sound of two stones struck together carries him somewhere he has never been, shouting a name that isn’t his, reaching for a woman he has never met and would know anywhere. Soon he can no longer tell which grief belongs to which life.

Far beneath all of it, something has been waiting for four thousand years. It is done waiting soon.

For readers drawn tothe supernatural, to history that won’t stay buried, and to love that refuses to end.

How it begins

Chapter One

There is no light here, and it is not empty.

He has no body to stand in, but he is standing. He has no eyes, but he is looking, and what he looks at is nothing, and the nothing is full. Thought moves through it like weather moving down a valley, slow and heavy and going somewhere. None of it is his. All of it wants to be.

A grief comes through first, with no one attached to it. Then a longing so large it has no edges, pulling at him like a current pulls at a swimmer who has stopped paying attention, toward a woman he has never met and would know anywhere. He wants to let it take him. That is the danger. He holds on to himself instead, with both hands, as he would hold a ladder in a high wind.

Somewhere in the dark, someone strikes two stones together. He waits for the sound. There isn’t one.

And past the grief, past the longing, farther down than he wants to look, something is asleep. It is very large, and very patient, and it has been asleep a long time. He does not know what it is. He knows he must not wake it. He knows it in his hands and in his teeth.

Who’s who

The people around Rowan

  • Rowan Slate

The one the whole town calls

He fixes what breaks, plows driveways before dawn, and answers the fire pager in the middle of the night. Written words have fought him all his life. People, he reads at a glance.

He never says no. It isn’t in him…

    Chapter One
  • Angus Munro

The man who believed in him

Hired Rowan at fifteen, when every report card had a harder word for the way his mind worked. For forty years, he kept something to himself.

A different kind of eye, Angus called it, the day he hired him…

    Chapter One
  • Wren

    His daughter, nineteen

Sharp, quick to see through her father, and closer to leaving home than she has told him.

“That’s not a good enough reason for you to stay small.”

    Chapter One
  • Sam

    His son

Grown, and ready for a life a long way from the mountains he was raised in.

“Thank you. For not making me stay small.”

    Chapter Six
  • Deb Halloran

    His partner on calls

Four years of emergencies side by side. She knows when he isn’t fine before he admits it.

“I could use some insane. Call me whenever you’re ready. I’m not going anywhere.”

    Chapter Five
  • Katie

    His sister

Calls two or three nights a week, the way she has since their mother died. One of the few people he doesn’t perform for.

“Let somebody else be steady for one day.”

    Chapter Four
Silhouette art: a meteor streaks over a village of palms, two figures hold a glowing spiral between them, a lantern burns on a stone viaduct, and a motorcycle waits on a mountain road.

Glimpses

A dark stone glowing from within with a spiral, sparks rising into mist.
…the dark one is warm, warm as a palm, warm as something alive… Chapter Four
A man holding a book stands in a vast library, facing an aisle that ends in darkness.
Rows and rows of them, extending in every direction, more books than any single lifetime could account for. Every direction but one. Chapter Sixteen

Questions for discussion

Six questions that keep the book’s secrets, safe to read before you start.

  1. “Grief, Rowan is discovering, does not announce itself on a schedule.” When has grief arrived for you later than you expected, or from a direction you didn’t see coming?

  2. Angus tells Rowan, “Whatever it is you’re built to go find, you go find it while your knees still work.” What would you go find? What has kept you from it?

  3. Rowan wonders what Angus carried for forty years “with no words for it.” Why do people so often keep the most important things unsaid?

  4. Marion’s headstone reads “She kept the light on.” What does it mean to keep a light on for someone? Who has kept one on for you?

  5. “Some vows don’t require a living voice on the other end to remain entirely true.” Have any promises in your life outlasted the people they were made to?

  6. The book opens in a dark that “is not empty.” What did that first page lead you to expect, and how had your expectations changed by the last page?

Some stories end. This one keeps choosing to begin again.
